His name is Zhang Guoshuai, born in rural Henan. An accident took away his limbs while working. Now, his biggest wish is to be able to install prosthetic limbs and be able to support himself again.

13-year-old went out to work with others

The day before yesterday, a Beijing Morning News reporter saw Zhang Guoshuai in the intensive care unit of You'anmen Hospital. When someone came to visit, he struggled to sit up in only shorts, exposing his missing limbs.

Zhang Guoshuai is 22 years old and was born in rural Anyang City, Henan Province. He said that his mother disappeared when he was a child and his father died suddenly due to alcoholism. He did not want to burden his uncle anymore. When he was 13 years old, he went out to work with others and raised himself. But misfortune befell Zhang Guoshuai once again. At the end of last year, he and his fellow villagers were doing odd jobs at a construction site in Gu'an, Hebei. "I saw a piece of board was warped, so I used tools to flatten it." Unexpectedly, there was an 1,100-volt high-voltage line above his head, and Zhang Guoshuai fainted from electric shock.

Zhu Haitao, the attending doctor at You'anmen Hospital in Fengtai District, said that Zhang Guoshuai's limbs were carbonized and severely edematous when he was brought there. "It turned out that his limbs could not be saved, so we performed amputation surgeries on him twice after consultation." Dr. Zhu said that during the six months since Zhang Guoshuai was hospitalized, except for the initial company of his co-workers and the visit of his uncle who was over eighty years old, no relatives or friends came. Zhou Jingya, director of the medical department, recalled that even when the operation required a signature, "no one was willing to sign, so he held the pen in his mouth and signed it himself."

Although Zhang Guoshuai is recovering well now, the hospital still placed him in the intensive care unit considering that he would have no one to take care of him after he was discharged. Regarding this, Zhang Guoshuai said that he kept it in mind, "it really gave me a second life."

Requires at least 100,000 and has raised nearly 40,000

According to Dr. Zhu, if Zhang Guoshuai's limbs can be successfully fitted with prostheses, he will be able to take care of himself after long-term exercise. Director Zhou said that the hospital has launched charity donations for him, and together with previous donations from some caring people, it has raised 39,000 yuan, but it will cost at least 100,000 yuan to install four prostheses. Although Zhang Guoshuai lost his hands and feet, he was unwilling to beg for a living and still hoped to be able to install prosthetic limbs to support himself.
