Solutions to the problem of residual limb wear and blistering

It is caused by the swelling of the leg, or the space of the inner tube (socket) of the prosthetic limb is a little narrow and awkward, and the two sides cause friction.

Solution 1:A first is to reduce swelling. You can refer to the hot water soaking method and dry cleaning method mentioned above to reduce the degree of swelling. At the same time, wear as little or no prosthetic limbs as possible. The actual results will be visible after a few days. B If it is confirmed that the inner sleeve (limb tube) is narrow and crowded, you can take out the inner sleeve and use a file to grind it thinner directly at the place where the leg is worn to expand the space of the inner sleeve. But this step must be done with caution. It is better to spend a few more things, polish it little by little, and gradually expand it until it fits. This can only be completed after repeated fittings.

Special reminder: The authenticity of the pain can only be confirmed after the abrasion on the residual limb has completely healed. Otherwise, illusions will occur and mislead your judgment.

Due to the wear and tear of the prosthetic limb over time, the inner tube wall of the prosthetic limb becomes thinner, and the residual limb continues to shrink irreversibly and slowly, so the inner sleeve space becomes relatively loose. During walking, there is obvious pain in a certain part, and you can even feel that due to looseness, the residual limb is rubbed up and down with each step, as if you are constantly pulling out a drawer.

Solution 2: According to the situation of blisters, add a liner to the corresponding position on the outside of the inner sleeve as appropriate. If the inner sleeve feels too loose, try thickening it entirely. I have seen some disabled friends use thick stockings to cover the entire outside of the inner sleeve, which is also a good method.

Material: preferably bubble-shaped plastic film (special for electronic product packaging). Its thickness is easy to control, and you can choose or choose according to the number of layers. In addition, thin sponges, thin adhesive sheets or leftover materials specially used for inner sleeves from prosthetic factories can be used after polishing them. These materials have some degree of dependence and generally will not shift; if it is padded on the lower part, you can use a little glue and needle thread to sew two or three stitches to fix it.

Special reminder:

A. Once a blister is removed, keep the cortex of the blister as intact as possible. It is best to use a sterilized needle tip to poke one or two holes under the blister and carefully squeeze out the water.

B. It is best not to touch the affected area with water to wash the blisters, as this can easily cause infection and make it difficult to heal. The wound surface should only be gently wiped with sterile cotton swabs and sterile gauze.

C. The best way to heal a wound is to allow it to be exposed to the air naturally, keep it clean and dry, and do not need to be bandaged. Stop wearing your prosthesis for a few days. Not to mention the pain, the wound will peel off skin repeatedly and bleed, delaying the healing time. Even if infection occurs due to no treatment, the gain outweighs the loss.
