Recently, the Department of Orthopedic Medicine of the Fourth Medical Center of the People's Liberation Army General Hospital successfully completed the country's first osseointegrated prosthesis implantation surgery for a patient with high amputation of right thigh malignant tumor, bringing a groundbreaking breakthrough in the field of prosthetics.
53-year-old Shi underwent resection of a soft tissue tumor in his right thigh, but unfortunately, the postoperative pathological diagnosis was a malignant tumor. The tumor recurred and grew in size, causing him to lose the ability to stand and walk, posing a serious threat to his life and health. After multidisciplinary consultation, a comprehensive treatment plan including chemotherapy and high lower limb amputation surgery was determined.
After amputation surgery, traditional prostheses face the problem that the socket of the limb stump cannot meet the biomechanical requirements. However, the medical team rose to the challenge and performed bone prosthesis implantation surgery for patients with high lower limb amputation. This pioneering surgery transplanted the patient's vascularized proximal tibia to the acetabulum, thereby enhancing the muscle's ability to voluntarily contract. At the same time, a living "skin-bone" interface is constructed to fill the acetabular cavity, so that the residual limb has muscle and myoelectric signals and can autonomously control the movement of the prosthetic limb. The new technology of "targeted nerve transplantation" was also successfully applied in this operation, effectively solving the worldwide problem of poor synergy of smart prostheses caused by poor muscle activity in the residual limb.
In recent years, the Department of Orthopedics of the Fourth Medical Center of the People's Liberation Army General Hospital has invited internationally renowned experts to conduct exchanges and discussions based on the characteristics of Chinese bone structure, and has designed and developed a "Chinese-style" osseointegrated prosthetic system. This system has changed from relying on binding external forces to fix prostheses to simulating autologous bone-dominated prostheses, exploring a development path for the clinical application of human-machine integration and neuro-intelligent control of prostheses in the field.
The patient recovered well after the operation and has tried to practice wearing the prosthesis. This successful case not only brings hope to patients to walk again, but also points the way for the future development of prosthetic technology. I believe that in the near future, with the continuous advancement of science and technology, prosthetic technology will be more perfect and bring good news to more amputees.
