Wear a prosthetic limb and fall down. Don't panic. Get up.

If you fall down after wearing a prosthetic limb, you can follow the following steps to get up:

1. Stay calm

First of all, don’t panic. Avoid making wrong movements due to nervousness, which may aggravate the injury. After a fall, take a short rest on the spot and evaluate your physical condition, especially the injured part, to see if there is any damage to the prosthesis in addition to the scratches and bumps that may be caused by the fall, such as whether the joints of the prosthetic limb are deformed, whether the socket is displaced, etc.

2. Adjust the posture

Lying on the side

If you fall forward in a prone position, you can first turn your body into a side-lying position. Use your uninjured or more flexible limb (such as your upper limb) as support to slowly turn your body sideways. For example, support the ground with your right elbow and forearm, and turn your body to the right so that your body is lying on your side.

When lying on your side, pay attention to the position of the prosthesis and try to avoid excessive squeezing or distortion of the prosthesis. If the prosthesis has become twisted during the fall, carefully adjust it to a relatively natural position.

Sitting and standing positions

Convert from lying on your side to sitting and standing. Continue to support the body with the arms, lift the upper body, and at the same time draw the legs (including the prosthetic limbs) toward the body, gradually forming a sitting position. During this process, the friction on the ground should be used to stabilize the body and prevent slipping again.

3. Get up with the help of supports

Look for suitable supports

Look for stable objects around you, such as chairs, railings, walls, etc. If you are indoors and fall close to a wall, you can grab the edge of the wall or the handrails on the wall with your hands; if you are outdoors, you can look for street light poles, street railings, etc.

Stand up with the help of a support

Grasp the support firmly with both hands and shift the body's center of gravity to one side of the support. If the prosthesis is a lower limb prosthesis, first bend the good leg so that the foot is flat on the ground as the main point of support. Then, using the strength of your arms and the support of your good leg, gradually straighten your legs and pull your body upward. During this process, attention should be paid to the fit of the prosthetic limb to ensure that the prosthetic limb can correctly bear the weight of the body during standing to avoid falling again due to inappropriate prosthetic limbs.

If you feel seriously injured after a fall, such as fractures, joint dislocation, or heavy bleeding, do not force yourself to get up and call emergency personnel for help immediately.
