Electronic skin: the “tactile savior” of prosthetics
Electronic skin has not yet become popular on prosthetics, but it is quite capable. To put it bluntly, this thing is like a super-sensitive "touch sensor" installed on a prosthetic limb. There are a bunch of ultra-small sensors on it, like small antennae. As soon as the prosthetic limb touches something, these small sensors can quickly convert information such as pressure, temperature, and whether the surface is smooth or rough into electrical signals, and then transmit them through wires to a small part that specializes in signal processing. This part is like a translator, translating electrical signals into instructions that the brain can understand. When the technology is mature and applied in the future, the brain will be able to clearly understand what the prosthetic limb touches.
Just say get a water glass. Without the electronic skin, holding a water cup with the prosthetic limb was all a matter of guessing. Either the hand was too loose and the cup fell, or the hand was held too tightly and there was a "click" and the cup broke. If there is electronic skin, the prosthetic limb can steadily pick up the water cup based on the feeling of touch, and can also know whether the water is cold or hot, almost like a real hand.
Developing electronic skin is not an easy task. Scientists are looking for suitable materials to make sensors, ones that are soft and sensitive, just like looking for superheroes who can defeat big monsters. Processing signals is not simple either. The signals must be transmitted smoothly and not messy, just like queuing up a group of naughty animals. They must be arranged neatly. Also, you have to make sure that the electronic skin can get along well with the human body and don’t get into trouble.
Although electronic skin is still working hard to grow in the laboratory, it is like a sprouting seed, bringing hope to prosthetic users.
