Cases of limb pain | This pain is not "just tolerate it", let alone take the plaster on your own

Changsha Evening News Changsha on the PalmDecember 15th (All Media Reporter Yang Yunlong Correspondent Zeng Jie) "After half a year, I can finally sleep well and walk with prosthetic limbs." 73-year-old Wang Aoyun from Liuyang was full of smiles when he went through the discharge procedures. Who would have thought that, after living with a prosthetic limb for more than 30 years, she developed pain in the stump of her left lower limb due to excessive activity six months ago. "We have encountered many patients like Wang Aoyun who have been enduring the pain, causing the pain to become more and more severe, which not only affects the quality of life, but may also delay the best time for treatment." Today, Zhu Jian, leader of the Pain Science Department of the Hunan Provincial Institute for Occupational Disease Prevention and Control (Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment Institute Affiliated to Nanhua University) reminded everyone that timely medical treatment is the key.

It is reported that Wang Ao has lived with a prosthetic limb for more than 30 years. Six months ago, she developed pain in the stump of her left lower limb due to excessive activity. At first, it was just a slight sting when she went to the ground to bear weight. Later, the pain became more severe and she could not even wear the prosthetic limb normally, which seriously affected her daily life and mental health.

Recently, when she went to the Pain Department of Hunan Provincial Occupational Disease Prevention and Control Hospital, Zhu Jian led the team to combine the relevant examination results and rule out pathological neuralgia in the residual limb, considering it to be "lower limb pain (left lower limb stump)" caused by long-term wear of the prosthesis. After careful preoperative preparation, Zhu Jian performed "peripheral nerve modulation under local anesthesia" on Wang Aao, blocking the pain from the source. On the second day after the operation, under the guidance of medical staff, Wang Aao tried to get out of bed wearing a prosthesis and only experienced slight pain.

Stump pain refers to the pain that occurs in the remaining limb after amputation, mostly after amputationThe nature of the pain varies from 1 month to several years, and common ones include stinging, burning, electric shock pain, squeezing pain, etc. In severe cases, it affects the patient's sleep, diet and prosthetic limb wearing, and even causes patients to suffer from psychological problems such as anxiety and depression.

There are three main causes of stump pain:

The first is neurological factors. After amputation, a neuroma will form at the stump of the nerve. When the neuroma is stimulated, it will discharge abnormally, causing pain.

The second is local factors. Poor stump wound healing, scar hyperplasia, infection, or improper wearing of prostheses causing pressure and friction on the stump can also cause pain.

The third is psychological factors. Some patients have anxiety, depression and other emotions due to inconvenience in life after amputation, which will further aggravate pain perception.

If there is persistent pain in the stump after amputation, or the pain does not relieve for more than 1 month, or even affects sleep, diet, and wearing of the prosthetic limb, you must go to the pain department of a regular hospital in time and receive targeted treatment after a clear diagnosis. Do not take medicine or plaster on your own to avoid aggravating the condition.

The pain department is the first choice for precise treatment. The pain department is a department that specializes in treating various types of chronic pain. For stump pain, pain doctors will make a detailed assessment and formulate a personalized treatment plan. In addition to peripheral nerve destruction surgery, drug therapy, nerve block therapy, physical therapy, psychological intervention and other methods will be used according to the patient's condition to help patients relieve pain.

Postoperative rehabilitation and prosthesis wearing must be standardized. After amputation, patients should carry out functional training on the stump as soon as possible under the guidance of medical staff to promote the healing of the stump and reduce the risk of neuroma formation. When wearing a prosthesis, they should choose a suitable prosthesis to avoid pressure and friction on the stump caused by being too tight or too loose. At the same time, the condition of the stump should be checked regularly. If problems such as redness, swelling, and increased pain occur, the prosthesis should be adjusted or seek medical attention in time.

Family company is very important. After amputation, patients may experience low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and other emotions, which can aggravate pain perception. Family members should accompany and encourage patients more, help patients adjust their mentality, and face life positively. If necessary, they can seek help from a psychologist to relieve emotions and reduce pain through psychological intervention.
