College entrance examination volunteer to fill in, may wish to know about prosthetic major

The college entrance examination is about to come to an end, and candidates are about to make an important decision in life - filling in the application form. Among the many majors, there is a relatively niche but significant major - prosthetics, which may deserve everyone's attention.

1. What to learn in prosthetics major

Prosthetics, the full name of prosthetics and orthopedics engineering, is a typical "integration of medicine and engineering" profession. It integrates basic theories and knowledge in rehabilitation medicine, biomechanics, rehabilitation technology, electromechanical technology, material science, and prosthetic and orthopedic design and production. Students must not only study basic medical courses such as human anatomy and physiology to understand the structure and functions of the human body; they must also master engineering knowledge such as mechanical drawing, engineering mechanics, and materials science to lay the foundation for the design and production of prosthetics and orthotics.

In professional courses, core content such as prosthetics, orthotics, and rehabilitation engineering technology will be covered, allowing students to learn in-depth skills in the structure, design, material selection, production technology, and clinical rehabilitation services of prosthetics and orthotics. For example, through learning, students can use biomechanical principles to design the most suitable prosthetic socket based on the patient's residual limb condition, select appropriate joints and materials, and make a functional and comfortable prosthesis. At the same time, students can also provide patients with rehabilitation training guidance after prosthetic assembly, helping them adapt to and use the prosthetic proficiently as soon as possible, and restore a certain degree of self-care and work ability.

2. What are the institutions?

At present, many domestic colleges and universities offer prosthetics and orthopedic engineering majors. Among research-oriented universities, Capital Medical University has performed well in this professional field and ranked first in the Alumni Association's 2025 Chinese University Prosthetic and Orthopedic Engineering Major Ranking (Research-oriented). It has strong faculty and advanced teaching and research equipment, providing students with a high-quality learning and research environment. In addition, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xuzhou Medical University, etc. are also at the forefront of this professional ranking.

In terms of applied universities, Gannan Medical University and Binzhou Medical College tied for first place in the Alumni Association's 2025 Chinese University Prosthetic and Orthopedic Engineering Major Rankings (Applied). Gannan Medical University follows the teaching philosophy of “high integration of medicine and engineering, emphasizing practice, and seeking innovation” and has cultivated many outstanding prosthetic and orthopedic engineering professionals for the society. Binzhou Medical College also focuses on practical teaching, allowing students to accumulate rich practical experience in the learning process and better adapt to future jobs. In addition to these institutions, Jining Medical College, Xinxiang Medical College Sanquan College, etc. also offer this major, providing candidates with more choices.

3. What are the employment prospects?

Our country is the most populous country in the world and also the country with the largest number of disabled people and elderly people. With the continuous development of the economy and the progress of society, people with disabilities, the elderly, and patients with chronic diseases and other functional impairments are increasingly aware of rehabilitation and health care, and their demand for rehabilitation medical technical services and the quality of rehabilitation assistive devices is on the rise. In addition to common rehabilitation treatments and surgical corrections, most disabled people also need prosthetics, orthopedics or assistive devices.

According to data released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the scale of the national rehabilitation assistive device industry in 2020 is approximately 700 billion yuan, and it is expected that the scale of China's rehabilitation assistive device market will exceed 1 trillion yuan by 2025. The "14th Five-Year Plan for the Protection and Development of Disabled Persons" and the "14th Five-Year Plan for National Aging Development and Elderly Care Service System" issued by the State Council also clearly mentioned the goal of "accelerating the development of rehabilitation assistive device services". This series of data and policies all show that my country's rehabilitation assistive devices and rehabilitation service industry have huge development potential, and the prosthetic and orthotic technology industry is in a period of rapid expansion, with an increasing demand for professional talents.

However, there is currently a serious shortage of prosthetics and orthotics practitioners in our country. According to the China Rehabilitation Equipment Association in 2012, there were less than 800 registered prosthetics and orthotics practitioners nationwide. The training of professional talents is far from meeting the market demand, especially the lack of mid-to-high-end talents. Therefore, the employment prospects of prosthetic and orthopedic engineering majors are very broad. Graduates can engage in clinical rehabilitation treatment, rehabilitation robot training and treatment, VR treatment, and the production, assembly, evaluation, and use training guidance of prosthetics and orthotics in hospitals, enterprises and institutions in the rehabilitation departments of major general hospitals at home and abroad, rehabilitation specialty hospitals at all levels, large medical and health care institutions, prosthetic and orthotic centers of the Disabled Persons' Federation, prosthetic and orthotic equipment manufacturers, large medical equipment companies, rehabilitation equipment adaptation institutions, intelligent medical equipment research and development companies, industry associations and other related fields at home and abroad. You can also choose to apply for postgraduate studies in biomedical engineering, prosthetics and orthopedic engineering and other majors to further improve your professional level and broaden your career development path.

Filling out the application form for the college entrance examination is an important turning point in life, and it is crucial to choose a promising major that suits you. Although the prosthetic profession is niche, it is full of opportunities and challenges. It can not only bring good news to the disabled people, but also provide broad development space for practitioners. I hope that all candidates may wish to learn more about the prosthetics profession when filling out their application. Maybe it is the key to a wonderful career.
